The Marketing Funnel: Who Uses it and Why?

This article shows exactly how a small time home business owner can compete with big business by playing in the same game. It's been under your nose the whole time.


In order to explain this system, let's use a familiar illustration that most people would not expect: A lady that's famous for her tips and techniques for cooking, gardening and decorating. I think you can guess who this is.Exposure is the first step in any business marketing.

First, she has a TV show (valuable content that is FREE). She probably mentions her website at least 3 times during the show and makes a compelling offer in order to get you there. This compelling offer usually doesn't cost her any money how about a free recipe book or a free report on the newest gardening tools, or a discount on a decorative sparkly paint for your bathroom walls? Most of the time it's going to be MORE free information that her target market will like. All of this offered just to get you to the website.

Once you're there, the first thing they want is to get you to put your name and email address into the info capture form on her website. This is the start of what they call the "marketing funnel".
Catching the potential client's interest is the first part. The "involve" comes from getting them to opt into the autoresponder list with a compelling offer.

In our decoration diva's case, you are offered free decorating or cooking ideas, etc. It's always as close to free as possible. This shows "results in advance" and it proves that you can trust her to sell you things you want and it will bring real value to your life. It helps that she tells you about her family and shows you that she's just a regular lady, just like her audience.You must make it in THEIR interest to get involved.

This is a business, so "involvement" often means (GASP!) talking on the phone. Focus on finding out what the prospect is looking for. Ask them, "What exactly were you looking for when you found my website? What big challenge are you looking to solve?"

Then based on their answers, show them how your product could be a solution to their problem. When they see that, the light bulb goes on and they say "You know what? I'm going to upgrade. This is the solution I'm looking for. I'm ready to get started."

Next comes the part every marketer loves. It's also the part where our Queen of "a good thing" gets paid. After she gets them to opt in...This is when they upgrade. Another way of saying it: they spend money. Here's how she does it:

She sends you a new email every 4 to 5 days full of great recipes and decor ideas that you just HAVE to try, but (mysteriously!) each of the ideas requires a utensil or ingredient or decorating material that almost no one has. But the good ol' patron saint of gardening saves the day by providing a link (her affiliate link, of course...) to a website that sells exactly what you're looking for and since you have to buy it anyway, why should she (let's call her Martha) NOT get a percentage?

This marketing funnel system will work for just about any kind of product or service. In fact I'm going to say that there is NO business that cannot benefit from a system like this. Think about some other examples food industry, music, banking, film and other types of entertainment, travel, etc. It's up to you how you implement it in YOUR business.

The Road to Success - A.C.T.I.O.N.

Without question almost every home business owner ... with time ... Working from home has many perks, but along with the perks come ... Those ... if left ...

Without question almost every home business owner has struggled with time management. Working from home has many perks, but along with the perks come distractions.

Those distractions if left unchecked can destroy your business. So, how do you find a balance between home life and home business life?

In its simplest form, the answer can be boiled down to how you manage your time.

Realistically, it’s about doing the right things when the right things need doing.

Read that last sentence over again and really let it sink in.

Do the right things when the right things need doing.

That leads us to the next obvious question. How am I going to know what the right thing to do is and when to do it?

The key to that answer can be found in the word ACTION.

A-AWARENESS

You have to be consciously aware of what needs to be done. Take the time to put a plan together for your business. A well prepared plan gives you the ability to see if you are on track or not. Not too many people would leave on a cross country road trip without a map and a destination in mind. Along with that, most people would have ideas on where they might stop along the way, and a holiday budget. Why would you run your business with no map, destination, ideas or a budget? Think about what your business will need, where you want your business to go, and what you need to do. Be AWARE of what needs doing.

C-COMMITMENT

Be committed to your business. Once again, the road trip holiday can provide us with some ideas. If you left on a road trip holiday with no plan, and weren’t committed to getting to a destination, would any of your friends be surprised if you didn’t successfully complete the trip? Of course not. Without a commitment to your business, you will fail. Make a COMMITMENT and see your plan through to completion.

T-TENACITY

Have tenacity to persist and see it through. Back to the road trip. If you get a flat tire, do you give up and go home? Not likely, you fix it and continue on. Don’t allow little things to stop you from the big things you have planned for your business. Focus on your goals and plans and be persistent. Have TENACITY and don’t give up.

I-INGENUITY

Use ingenuity to find the workable way. When an obstacle appears, pull out your road map (or plan), take a look at it and see if there are other routes available that will keep you on track to your destination. Seek advice from the locals (or other people in home businesses similar to yours). Your ability to use INGENUITY will directly affect your business’ success.

O-OBJECTIVITY

Use objectivity for an undistorted perspective. Take a break, a breather, step back, clear your head every now and again to maintain your objectiveness in making decisions for your business. Take a
moment to survey the lay of the land on your road trip, it will make travel much easier. OBJECTIVITY gives you the ability to see things in your business clearly.

N-NAVIGATE

Navigate a manageable pathway. If the vehicle you’re taking on a road trip has marginal brakes, don’t plan a route that takes you through the highest mountains!! Know what your limits are and what you can do. Navigating a manageable pathway to your destination betters your chances for business success!

Another in our current series aimed at assisting the new Home Business owner to develop and grow his new business. We look at setting and managing our own business objectives - to keep us focused.

In the business world, there is a well-used business tool, called "Management by Objectives." This has been around for a long time, but is still widely practised, because of its simplicity and effectiveness. (It's just as important for you to keep track of how well you are doing.)

Tasks, targets or objectives are agreed by a manager and employee and dates are set for completion of each. Regular follow up meetings review progress, check off completed items ,and add new ones to the list. The reasons for any unfinished tasks are discussed, and revised dates are set, if necessary.
During regular follow-up discussions progress towards completion of these objectives is measured, those completed are signed off while new targets are discussed and set.

The individual home business owner's reaction might understandably be to question the need for anything like this in a one-person home business. However, the sound reasons for setting and managing objectives apply equally to any business, no matter how large or small. The logic is simply that this process (MBO) is a means of planning for a business, keeping a record of targets attained, and equally of keeping track of those (not) attained.

The basic task of sitting down to think through a plan for your business is a worthwhile exercise in itself. It's a way of listing important items to be completed and ticking them off when done. It's a very good habit to aim for a reasonable "do-by" date for each, as well. If delays are encountered there's no problem, simply re-set the date to something reasonable.
We're all human, and one of man's greatest weaknesses is procrastination. It's too easy to put off those less enjoyable items for another day. Not everyone has a razor-sharp memory and long delayed items can eventually be forgotten. You can be in serious trouble if you miss a deadline for submitting your tax-return!

The suggestion is to set up a little document, with say four columns:

Date Set; Objective; Importance (1-3); Do-by Date;

You should have no more than about 6 items at any one time, and it's vital to keep this as a living document, that should be reviewed about weekly. You can keep it on paper, or in your computer. There's a certain satisfaction in clicking Delete when a tiresome task is complete and out of the way.
Make some of your goals short-term, (e.g. Try opening folders to keep those e-mails you might want to refer back to) and some long term (e.g. Learn some HTML to make small changes to my Web-site.)

I'm sure that you will derive the benefits of sticking to this little exercise, and it's especially valuable to you in ensuring that your business doesn't stagnate.
